Related: About this forumBerkeley’s homeless feel squeezed as neighbors seek clampdown
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Berkeley-s-homeless-feel-squeezed-as-neighbors-6648069.phpHis was one of several small homeless encampments that have bloomed in the park in recent months, commandeering fields that border a playground, a baseball diamond, and a basketball court.
Residents say these camps are ruining a sacred part of the neighborhood. Created in 1974 when a group of activists clinched a $1-a-year lease from BART, Ohlone Park turned a three-block strip of sidewalk into a lush greenway. For decades, its been a place for picnics, little league practices and morning tai chi....
Maio responded by proposing new ordinances that the City Council approved Tuesday to bring the homeless problems under control, in part by discouraging people from strewing their bags on city sidewalks and urinating and defecating in the parks. She also called for the city to provide mobile showers and storage units for peoples effects and to crack down on camping in the citys parks....
Nonetheless, the new laws prompted strong opposition in Berkeley, where housing activists camped out in front of City Hall the night before the council meeting. The city has long presented itself as a refuge for drifters and social misfits. Many longtime residents cling to that image at a time when housing prices are rising and a trendy arts district is blossoming downtown.

daredtowork is one such longtime resident. I imagine she will have something to say about this.

Homeless people are leading the protest t defend their own human rights by occupying Berkeley City Hall. Their encampment just got a warning notice yesterday, so the week-long protest is about to bust some new civil disobedience moves.
If anyone wants to support the Occupiers, bring food to old City Hall and ask what else they need to hold out indefinitely.

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Berkeley-OKs-laws-dealing-with-homeless-6669301.php
Amid protest from homeless activists, the Berkeley City Council on Tuesday night approved a set of laws aimed at establishing a minimum standard of civility on the citys streets.
The laws ban people from sleeping in planter beds, leaving personal belongings in trees, or taking up more than a 2-square-foot space on the sidewalk. They also tighten an existing ban on public urination and defecation....
The council voted 6-3 to pass the laws at a rowdy meeting that lasted well into the night Tuesday. Councilmen Max Anderson, Jesse Arreguin and Kris Worthington dissented.
In an interview Monday, Arreguin called the ordinances a half-baked, reactive response to a really important issue.
