BART offering riders perks to ease overcrowding on trains

There’s a new way to make cash in the Bay Area: riding BART.

The transit agency launched a 6-month program on Tuesday offering the possibility of cash incentives to passengers who avoid boarding trains during the height of the morning commute, officials said.

BART Perks program offers points passengers can exchange for cash, as long they’re over 18 years old, use a Clipper card and have a PayPal account. Participants earn one point for every mile traveled by train, with six times as many points awarded to those who begin riding between 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

“What we’ve seen recently — between 7:30 and 8:30 especially — is people can’t even board the trains they want to board because it’s so crowded,” said BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost. “We’re trying to think outside of the box on what we can do right now with what we have to alleviate congestion.”

Phew! For a second there, I thought they were going to start bumping people like the airlines!
