(Prop 32) Koch Brothers try to kill California unions

http://www.peoplesworld.org/koch-brothers-try-to-kill-california-unions/

No sooner were opinion polls showing the labor-led campaign to defeat California Proposition 32 gaining ground by 10 points earlier this month, than the multi-billionaire Koch brothers dropped $4 million to shore up support for the anti-union measure on the November ballot.

Prop 32 would ban both unions and corporations from using payroll-deducted funds for political purposes in California. Meanwhile, corporations would have a free ride to raise unlimited funds to support pro-corporate candidates.

<snip>

The outcome of the battle over Prop 32 has broad implications nationally because California's labor movement represents more than two million members out of a total of more than 14 million nationally, making California's union membership the largest in the nation.

"Twenty years from now, this will be a point that we'll all look back and say 'This is where we lost it,' or 'This is where we turned it around.' Let's turn it around," IBEW's Norton aptly summarized what labor and other progressive social movements see as the stakes in this battle.

the catch is that only a tiny fraction of corporations use payroll deductions for political purposes, so the hammer comes down only on unions.

election information pamphlets required by the state. Look to see who "signs" the pro and con statements. Can be a good initial tell on a Proposition's real intent.

It's billed as good-government reform, but is actually straight out of the ALEC playbook, with paygo, unilateral budget cuts by the governor, and even a provision that lets localities opt out of state laws!

I know that at first, even I was unsure of which way to vote until I found out exactly who is supporting this proposition. Supporters of prop. 32 make it sound like something a typical liberal would support like the "right-to-work" law, but to put it in layman's terms, you pretty much end up drinking piss when you're expecting apple juice. You have to hand it to the GOP, though; they sure do have clever ways of tricking the working-class to vote against their interests. The Koch Brothers don't even live in CA, yet here they are trying to pollute our politics.

USC DORNSIFE/TIMES POLL

California voters leaning against campaign finance initiative

Proposition 32 would ban political contributions by payroll deduction. That would eliminate the main fundraising tool of unions but not of businesses.

By Michael J. Mishak, Los Angeles Times

SACRAMENTO — California voters appear poised to reject a November ballot measure that would ban political contributions by payroll deduction, according to a new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll.

Forty-four percent of those surveyed said they opposed Proposition 32, which would eliminate the main fundraising tool of unions. Just 36% said they supported the measure, which would also bar corporations and unions from contributing directly to candidates.

I've been a little leery of these things getting through the progressive firewall in CA ever since the Prop 8 debacle.

I knew that this was a bad measure from early on BUT, then I heard that the KKKoch Brothers were pumping millions to the yes side...

THAT made the No vs. Yes situation crystal clear and easy to explain to people.

And I got a couple of NO signs from a guy up the street!
