We live with that here now every summer. Eastern Washington state. Medical facilities all distribute N94 or 95 masks. Please get yourself one if you are going outside!

Also, I put a really good air cleaner. I basically suck on it (next to my bed) when the smoke gets bad!

sf air quality is red (unhealthy) North Bay fires bring ash and smoke to SF. Same link as above.

during the 2003 and 2007 fires in San Diego before they finally closed all of the schools (the 5th largest district in the country at the time).

Well I have to go out today, so I guess we will be smelling burning trees and brush while out there, streaming across the bay...into the city.

Because my cell phone still has a 707 area code, though I now live in the East Bay. I guess the authorities took so much grief for not sending out alerts earlier, that they're sending them to everyone now.
