California
Related: About this forumProp. 10 allows rent control to be expanded. Any decent liberal would support this.
They tried to get rid of rent control in California and they almost did, but since they couldn't get rid of it completely, they limited it to the few cities that had it already and didn't allow those cities to expand it.
So, if you want to take the side of megacorporation apartment building owners, then you vote against Prop. 10. The liberals and progressives that care about not exhorbitantly raising the rent on granny are voting for Prop. 10, including the Democratic Party and the League of Women Voters.
here's who supports Prop. 10:
SUPPORTED BY CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY; California Nurses Association; Housing California; National Urban League; ACLU of California; AIDS Healthcare Foundation; Property Owners for Fair and Affordable Housing; Painters & Allied Trades 36; Service Employees International Union (SEIU); American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME); Humboldt and Del Norte Counties Central Labor Council AFL-CIO; California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation; Western Center on Law and Poverty; National Action Network-Los Angeles; Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy; and tenant organizations throughout the state.
here's who opposes Prop 10:
American G.I. Forum of California, California Senior,Advocates League, California State Conference NAACP,California Association of REALTORS, Family Business
Association of California, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers,Association, California Chamber of Commerce, California Business Roundtable, United Latinos Vote

I expect conservatives to say BS things about rent control in this state. I expect Democrats and Liberals here to read the actual language of the initiative and the analysis by the Secretary of State so that they don't believe the BS.

(4,516 posts)The way I understand it if 10 passes it is like starting from scratch and no one knows what will happen as far as rent control goes.
It seems to me who ever is in power when it comes time to make new rules rent control may expand or be gone for ever.

(46,192 posts)I mean, when the realtors put that stuff in an ad on tv, at least they have to pay to put it up.
But you're doing it for free!
1) current law allows rent control only in a few cities where it previously existed and only to existing or older buildings.
2) nothing in the current law stops a city from getting rid of rent control
3) Prop. 10 allows cities to adopt or expand rent control, currently they only have the option to reduce or eliminate it
But feel free to reply with the Realtor association's talking points, but you already did that so please don't post it again.

(46,192 posts)it's broadly popular because all it does is allow cities to adopt the rent control that fits their communities. allows them to expand where there is rent control and allows them to adopt rent control without all the loopholes that current laws require.

(11,088 posts)What is confusing about that? The 95 law was passed and signed by republicans and opposed by democrats and makes rent control illegal. This law was petitioned by grassroots community organizations and renters unions, not realtors or investors -the primary opponents to the law.

(4,516 posts)There will be no law. A clean slate. Current rent control can be eliminated as well as expanded. Who knows what will happen then?
Better the status quo than risk losing everything.
