"Major" S.F. gas leak empties city block

(02-20) 11:22 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco firefighters have evacuated one city block in the city's Mission District after a "major" gas leak, fire officials said.

The gas leak was first reported at 24th and Bryant streets a little before 11 a.m., said Deputy Fire Chief Mark Gonzales. Firefighters have hose lines in place, and Pacific Gas and Electric crews are responding to the scene to turn off the gas, he said.

"It sounds like it is a high-pressure line," Gonzales said.

...a huge water main break flooded out one of the cable car lines.

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Broken-water-main-halts-cable-cars-4293593.php

Crews are scraping mud out of cable-car tracks after a 12-inch water main burst on Russian Hill and sent water cascading down a steep hill.

The 78-year-old, cast-iron main burst at Mason and Filbert streets at 3 a.m. Wednesday, and thousands of gallons of water streamed down Mason Street and into the trenches that house the cables for the Powell-Mason cable car line, according to Muni.

Of course, this is potentially much more serious (*cough*San Bruno*cough*). At least it's "only" a 2-inch line.
