OAKLAND, Calif.
The 2-year-old boy who was hit by a stray bullet while playing in the front yard of his home in East Oakland remained in critical but stable condition at Children's Hospital Friday evening.
Distraught family members were at the hospital. They were outraged over the shooting that injured the innocent young boy. KTVU spoke with the boy's aunt in front of Children's Hospital about what happened.
"We seen that baby with that bullet and that blood," said the aunt, who gave her name as Amber. "They don't know the aftermath of what they did to somebody's child. When they're out there just shooting at people, y'all don't worry about nobody's kids."
The shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in the 9200 block of Sunnyside Street, police said.

And on Sunnyside Street.
Drugs and poverty and hopelessness, this tragedy belongs to all of us.

(41,832 posts)of posting it in LBN.. but the mod said its a local story, not national. How many kids have to be hit by bullets before it becomes a national story? Just wondering...

(68,644 posts)And once upon a time this story wouldn't have been allowed there, either, so don't despair.
I'm a host for both but wasn't checking alerts.
But LBN is truly reserved for the kinds of news that's breaking and that would make national news outlets.
Sadly, deaths by gun are such a daily occurrence that they aren't national news.

(41,832 posts)Florida prison break...how is that not a local story?

(68,644 posts)But unless someone alerts on it, nothing will happen.
If alerts are made on a post and the Statement of Purpose violation box is checked, then the hosts see it and will act on it.
Nobody alerted on this one that way, yet.
And as a host and former DU moderator I've advocated for trying to maintain some consistency but we're directed to resist locks in GD.
LBN, on the other hand, remains pretty well regulated, as you learned.

(41,832 posts)I don't think its fair, but I will just live with it.. Normally I try to stay away from LBN.. because EVERYTIME I post something it ends up
getting locked. Than when I don't and a decent story breaks...NO ONE COVERS it.
I give up.. I will just remain posting in GD, California and other places.
