So we had our third power outage here in the last two weeks in the south part of

San Luis Obispo County.
It seems someone hit a power pole close to the 101 freeway which not only caused the lights to go out but the downed lines crossed the freeway blocking traffic in both directions. We do get our power from the El Diablo nuclear plant. I have a battery powered radio that gives us local news from a station that also carries Rush L.. A local host who came on to report said after discussing that the 101 is our main artery to leaving, either north or south, said this, off hand:

"When Diablo Canyon explodes, we are all screwed".

I wrote his statement in the dark but I think it's accurate. Then another voice came in and said something to the effect that we are relying on PG&E to restore the power so don't go there or something like that.

I report. You decide.

(Just an aside) Only about 10-20% of our power comes from Diablo. Most of its output pinto Oct 2013 #5
I know that. But the fact is the power plant exists, and is active still. Cleita Oct 2013 #6
I wasn't clear. Just wanted to note what we get from the plant power wise. I'm in favor of shutdown. pinto Oct 2013 #7

We love the town and have imagined retiring there. I do worry about that plant.

I'm interested in hearing what the locals think.

Thanks

I never experienced that till Hurricane Sandy, now any strong wind makes the family nervous.

I hope they fix it soon and it never happens again.

Have a nice weekend

is allocated to areas with higher electricity demands. Which shifts at times. CA and PG&E use a variable grid to route power as demand shifts.

We have mainly the 101 to escape on if there is an incident. This is what Joe C., the radio host in question was alluding to. You know who he is but I didn't want to mention his whole name on a message board that goes everywhere. I don't agree with your suggestion that this is not a problem waiting to happen now because we only use 20% of our electricity from it. That is like suggesting that a woman is only a little bit pregnant. In the light of what we know about Chernobyl and Fukushima, we should be demanding the plant shut down, yesterday.

I know central coasters are complacent about the danger because it's a big employer around here. But to even suggest it's not such a big deal is not looking at all the evidence.
