San Bernardino: McCammack recalled, but leads in mayor's race; Penman also Recalled

Press Enterprise, November 06, 2013

San Bernardino voters on Tuesday, Nov. 5, sent Wendy McCammack into a runoff election with Carey Davis to be the city’s next mayor — even as they recalled her from her City Council seat.

Voters also ousted longtime City Attorney Jim Penman, who in more than two decades in office had withstood several attempts by opponents to remove him from office.

A third recall target will remain in office, while of the three council members up for re-election, one won, one lost and one will head to a runoff.

With seven of the city’s 10 elective offices on Tuesday’s ballot, the election will decide the course San Bernardino takes as it attempts to get out of bankruptcy over the next few years and tries to restore its financial footing.

MAYOR, COUNCIL RACES

McCammack and Davis were among 10 candidates seeking to replace Mayor Pat Morris, who did not seek a third term.

Also vying for the position were Councilman Rikke Van Johnson, building contractor Rick Avila, financial analyst Henry Nickel, retired teacher Richard Castro, public works employee Draymond “Dray” Crawford, real estate and mortgage broker Karmel Roe and start-up founder Matthew Korner. Economic development consultant Concepcion Powell is running as a write-in candidate.

Former councilman Chas Kelley’s name remained on the ballot even though he dropped out of the race and resigned his council seat three weeks before the election when he pleaded guilty to perjury charges over misuse of campaign funds.

In the Ward 2 race, incumbent Robert Jenkins lost to Benito Barrios, a small-business owner, and made a call to him Tuesday night to concede.

Councilman John Valdivia was the only recall target to hold his seat, with 3rd Ward voters rejecting the effort.

Glad to see Penman go; don't know much about Davis or McCammack; voted for Chas Kelley by mail-in ballot the very afternoon he announced his resignation; voted against Valdivia for the 2nd time, but had a feeling he'd survive -- some major $$ behind that brainless blow-in from nowhere. SO all in all. . .
