Big tortoise found strolling in Los Angeles suburb

ALHAMBRA, California (AP) -- At least officers didn't have to issue a speeding ticket when they spotted a giant tortoise ambling down a street suburban Los Angeles.

The Alhambra Police Department joked on its Facebook page that the 150-pound (68-kilogram) reptile was captured Saturday afternoon after a brief pursuit.

"The tortoise did try to make a run for it; but, our officers are pretty fast," the post said.

It took two officers to heft the hard-shelled creature into a patrol car. They then took the reptile to the local police station before turning it over to animal control authorities.

Los Angeles is surrounded by wilderness - and in the south by orange county which is nearly as bad

Oooops, you got big. I don't want you anymore.

What a cutie, glad she's safe now.

P.S. hope they gave her some strawberries while she was visiting the facilities.

That's an African spurred tortoise and it, no doubt, escape from its yard. Kevin Kaepernick (49er quarterback) has one name Sammy and it often escaped over the years. Fortunately his neighborhood knew Sammy by sight.

When a reporter asked Kevin Kaepernick what Sammy ate, he quipped, "eats the backyard".

I don't follow American football, but I think I've seen him on a McDonald's commercial. That tortoise is all kinds of awesome.
