While her Republican opponent gave a full-throated endorsement for legalizing marijuana, California Attorney General Kamala Harris (D) declined to say whether she supports allowing recreational use of the substance.

Republican Ron Gold, the state's former deputy attorney general, is challenging Harris in her reelection bid this fall. Gold has voiced his support for both medical and recreational marijuana, pointing to the failures of prohibition.

"It is common sense, reasonable and rational to change laws that have driven the market for marijuana into the hands of drug cartels and street gangs," Gold wrote in an op-ed last month.

In an interview with Sacramento NBC affiliate KRCA, Gold further explained his pro-marijuana position, noting the potential tax benefits for the state.....

This is the kind of shit that will lose us key positions in state and federal office if the Democratic Party does not get its act together and endorse legalization otherwise the Libertarian/TeaPartiers will take the youth vote from us.
Come on Kamala!

Democrats are so screwed up they are afraid of their own shadow now? It was Rethuglicans who forced the Drug War escalation on us through Reagan and Bush abetted by turncoat Joe Biden. Now that legalization is coming we are going to let them preempt us? What!?!? Did our party get too used to believing its own lies that Conservatives will see the light before us? Well "Us" is a misleading term here as most Democrats support legalization but our so-called leadership is rotten and amoral as they are addicted to Drug War money from private prisons to forfeiture to non-applicable rehab programs. This is an insult but I predicted it here a year ago to plenty of naysayers who are too afraid to appear Libertarian and worry about what they are not instead of who they are. Trust me their is an electric current running through America regarding the emerging Cannabis industry. Democrats risk being left behind and giving Rand Paul a chance to break through. Don't be stupid...force our leaders to stop resisting the tide.

They're scared to take a stand on anything. We even have a President who has admitted smoking weed, and he won't address the issue.

if they continue to let their leaders cower in the corner and not speak out against jailing people for cannabis.
The future is in legalization. Rand Paul sees that. I wish our Democratic leaders did.

If the Dems had taken the lead years ago the Libertarians would not have drawn over so many young voters and now this.

I'm in California and this sucks.

But it is sad when the Republican is making more sense then the Democrat.
I don't know if her problem is needing the support of the prison guard union like Gov. Brown or what.
I will not support a Democrat that tries to run from this topic especially from an attorney general.
The Democrats in office are mostly gutless cowards on this subject and the Republicans could steal all the pro legalization people from the Dems.
As a Democrat, if you don't stand up for legalization you deserve to lose.

I hate it when Democratic politicians try to laugh off the subject of thousands of Americans rotting in jail over cannabis.
It is their favorite way of answering any serious question on this subject.
Sickening.
I will be telling everybody I know that Ron Gold supports legalization.
