Del Mar Fair theme is "Out of This World," an ode to the outer limits of space

DEL MAR: This year's fair shoots for stars

2 hours ago • By DAN BENNETT For the North County Times

The San Diego County Fair will offer plenty of space this year.

The theme, "Out of This World," is an ode to the outer limits of space, as well as the more reachable destinations such as the moon and Mars. Space travel, ancient astronomers, NASA and the future of space exploration are all part of this year's theme at San Diego County's largest annual event.

The new attractions start with the new "Out of This World" exhibit, an interactive display area of all things space, including real-life exploration and science fiction. Guests can walk on the moon ---- or at least simulate the experience ---- and gaze at the stars. As the Mars Rover craft Curiosity will land on the planet in August, guests can watch simulations of the landing. Information on the Apollo program is plentiful, and a mini-theater will screen space-related short films.

For the UFO aficionados, there are displays of reported sightings and rumors, while crop circles, the Bermuda Triangle and the Mayan calendar are also on the agenda. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, San Diego Air and Space Museum, Palomar College Planetarium and Oceanside Photo & Telescope will have special exhibits. An actual meteor is on display.

"There is so much work done around space in our own communities, so we're bringing that knowledge here," Zweig said.
