A man was arrested after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase through several Bay Area counties.
The pursuit started in Vacaville after an officer ran plates on a light-colored SUV around 2 p.m. CHP officials say the plates came back clean but the driver, unaware that officers had run a check on the vehicle, sped away.

At least one tire on the SUV had disintegrated but the driver continued maneuvering through traffic at high speeds.
The chase ended in Santa Clara County on Highway 280 after the driver lost control of the SUV and crashed. The vehicle slammed into a concrete median barrier, careened back into northbound 280 lanes before rolling over onto its side.

I post this because it was of some mild interest to me: I was traveling westbound on I-80 in Fairfield, doing about 70mph...turned on KCBS radio just in time to hear them report a high speed chase on westbound I-80 in Fairfield...looked up into the rear view mirror in time to see a light colored SUV barreling up behind me, doing well over 90mph, with a whole bunch of flashing lights behind him...
Dude cut across directly in front of me, followed by at least 4 CHP patrol SUV's and 2 CHP motorcycle cops, and they all went barreling on up the highway. Seemed like they all missed me by about 10 ft. (I'm sure it was more but that's what it felt like at the time).

(19,459 posts)He made Vacaville to Concord in 20 minutes, and there was a fair amount of traffic on the road.

(20,886 posts)If you're going on a high speed chase, make sure your tires are good.
The only excitement we had was a murder, suicide. Over grapes, as best anyone can figure.

(19,459 posts)And they found a body in a freezer at a halfway house on Brown Street. And that guy who got shot and killed fleeing the cops in Alta Heights the other day.
As it was, that clown made it from Vacaville to Mountain View before he wrapped it up. He only blew the tire because they put out one of those puncture strips.
The news reported that he made it from Vacaville to Mountain View in about an hour, and there was moderate traffic.

(20,886 posts)Glad you're alright. That must have gotten the adrenaline going.
I watched the video. It was kind of amazing to watch him traveling that far and that fast on the rim and still maintaining control for as long as he did. And then, after wiping out and rolling, he got out of the car so casually.

(19,459 posts)I literally heard the news flash on KCBS and looked up into the rear view mirror to see the whole cavalcade come barreling up behind me. Felt like something out of the Blues Brothers.
I thought the same things as you mention watching the video. Seemed like he was looking at the cops like "Hey, how y'all doin'?"
Guy had some skill to keep it going after that tire disintegrated. I haven't yet heard why he ran in the first place.

(6,819 posts)I visit I am astounded by the aggressive drivers. I stay right. Any freeway chase, I can hope they will scream by me on the left.

(19,459 posts)but we're in the northern part of the state, across the bay from San Francisco. Drivers around here don't freak me out as much as the ones in southern California. They're crazy down there.
My eldest daughter went to college in Philadelphia, and I went back and spent three weeks with her just before she graduated. Driving in that city was the worst I've ever seen.
