Oh, Great... "Spoofing Scam Aimed at Licensees Purports to be Law Enforcement" (Colorado)

Cross-posted in GD

Once again, google phone numbers you don't recognize, even if they are identified as coming from an official agency. Don't BELIEVE that they are official from the identified source without googling or using another phone to call the number back. Just received the following email alert from Colorado's Department of Regulatory Authority. Could be that they try it elsewhere as well so FYI fellow DU licensed medical professionals.

Dear Licensee:
The Denver Police Department is seeing an uptick in fraud cases involving a jury duty/warrant scam that has targeted medical professionals and therapists that hold Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) licensing credentials.
Victims have suffered financial loss and endured threats of sexual violence unless the scam targets provide financial compensation - including gift cards, and are explicitly told not to contact other law enforcement entities. A high majority of targets of this extortion scheme are female. Gathering personally-identifying information is another goal within these deceitful attempts.
The scam works essentially as follows:
-- A local call with a Caller ID from Denver Sheriff’s Department or Denver Police Department is received. This is a spoofing attempt gathered from publicly available information.
-- The caller will identify themselves as a Deputy, Lieutenant or another ranking officer of the Denver Police Department.
-- Some identifying information will be provided to the call recipient in order to gain his/her trust.
-- The victim will then be told that failure to report for jury duty has resulted in an arrest warrant and that financial reparations need to be made in order to extricate them from the situation without further police contact / intervention.
-- A solicitation for gift card purchases and verification of personally identifying information then is made so that there is an assurance “they are who they say they are.”
Do not provide any personally identifying information over the phone, such as your social security number, to anyone with whom you are unfamiliar.
If consumers or licensees have doubts about the legitimacy of a call, they should take extensive notes, including confirming the caller’s name, phone number, and details of the alleged violation. Ask if you can call back, and then dial the Denver Police Department or Denver Sheriff Department main phone number.
If fraudulent activity is confirmed, contact local law enforcement.
