Bill aimed at stopping theft from fire companies passes General Assembly
Delaware's 60 volunteer fire companies soon could be subject to tighter financial controls aimed at preventing a recent wave of fraud, mismanagement and embezzlement among some of their members.
The state Senate on Thursday passed a bill to give the State Fire Prevention Commission the authority to require that those companies submit to additional audits by certified public accountants when needed. Currently, fire companies are required to submit only an annual financial report to the commissions.
Fire companies that fail to conduct additional audits, as requested, could lose state grant funding and be subject to a fine of up to $5,000.
The measure passed the House in January and now heads to Gov. John Carney for his signature.
