(57,457 posts)I gotta get up to the Walmart on Riggs Road NE and get me another one a' them five-pound sacks of grits.
Full disclosure: yes, the Walmart on Riggs Road NE, which is a three-block walk from the Ft. Totten Metro station (you can also take an R1 or R2 Metrobus, if you don't want to walk that far), sells grits in five-pound sacks. Guess which hot cereal I had for breakfast this morning? Walmart also sells mustard greens, but they were out the last time I was there.
Metro makes this Walmart a local store for me. Really. I walked back to Ft. Totten lugging my groceries, got on a southbound Yellow Line train, and the next thing you know, I was in Alexandria.

(57,457 posts)Seriously, with the Metro, this is one of the most convenient grocery stores to me.
I leave work. I take the Red Line to Fort Totten. Get off. Walk or take the bus an entire three blocks. Buy groceries. Walk or get on bus; go three blocks back to Ft. Totten. Get on Yellow Line train, or take Red Line to Gallery Place. "Dee-doo, dee-doo; doors closing." The next thing you know, I'm at my Metro station in Alexandria. Get on DASH bus and go home.
Driving I have to do: zero.

(57,457 posts)is closer to work, but it is smaller. The one on Riggs Road has a much bigger selection.

(130,908 posts)never had an issue with food shopping, Giant and Safeway, of course, but always with auto except my first years in DC, SW, @ waterfront, walked 2 blocks from apartment. After that, no way to walk with groceries for growing family! Husb did walk to Safeway once, after big snow in '87 (I think.)
