The National Zoo said Tuesday that its 12-year-old male cheetah, Shombay, has died after an illness related to a growth in his abdomen.
Officials said it was not known whether it was cancer. It will take at least two weeks for a necropsy report to come back with more details.
Shombay died Saturday, officials said. His health had been in decline since February when an X-ray showed a growth in his abdomen.
