Study: Key West has the most bartenders per capita than anywhere else

If you need a drink, Key West is officially the place to be.

According to analysis published Monday by the website CareerBuilder, the Southernmost City has the highest concentration of bartenders in the nation, 13.3 per 1,000 residents.

CareerBuilder Senior Career Advisor Ryan Hunt said bartending, along with hotel desk clerks and fishing-related workers, are the major occupations in Key West. According to Hunt, there are about 991 bartenders in Key West, the concentration being six times higher than the rest of the country.

Job postings for bartenders are usually slim.

"It's an occupation that is hired and fired by word of mouth," Hunt said.

Randell Box has worked as a bartender at the 801 Bourbon Bar on Duval Street for the past four years. He said there is a high turnover rate for bartenders in Key West, but some still manage to make it work.

"It's not a surprise," Box said of Key West leading the pack.

According to CareerBuilder, there are 1.8 bartenders per 1,000 people statewide.
