Fire causes $700,000 in damage at Daytona flea market

DAYTONA BEACH — An electrical fire and sprinklers destroyed 40 to 45 vendors' booths Thursday at the Daytona Flea and Farmers Market, leaving behind $700,000 worth of destruction, Volusia County fire officials said.

The blaze erupted about 9:30 a.m. inside a metal building along the eastern side of the facility that faces Interstate 95, said Volusia County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Nicholas Castelli. An electrical short sparked the fire which was then helped along by several plastic parts inside the building. The plastic caused the blaze to burn "very hot," Castelli said.

The blaze was extinguished within 15 minutes, Castelli said.

Daytona Beach Fire Department Engine 6 arrived first and made "an aggressive attack," helping to limit fire spread, and more firefighters from Daytona Beach and from Volusia County arrived to work the blaze, the VCFD said.
