Space-related groups, building avoid heavy damage from Hurricane Matthew

Kennedy Space Center came out of Hurricane Matthew much better than expected, though some facilities have shown damage and power outages have affected the complex.

Still, detailed inspections must wait until wind speeds drop below 58 miles per hour, a NASA spokesman George Diller told the Orlando Sentinel on Friday.

“When you look at the forecast we had going into this, it was much worse and we expected much more serious damage,” he said. “Having it shift east made the difference. It gave us a buffer.”

The Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday.
