FSU College Republicans say slow ticket sales force cancellation of D'Souza

Dinesh D’Souza, the firebrand conservative filmmaker and author, won’t be making a stop in Tallahassee this month.

D’Souza was scheduled to make his only Florida appearance April 14 as the guest speaker for the FSU College Republicans annual gala.

But slow ticket sales have forced the cancellation of the event, chair Landon Schneider said. The gala is the club’s major fundraiser.

“We made the decision to cancel after looking over the financials,” Schneider said. “We are going to try and have another gala for next year.”

Tallahassee is a small blue area in a larger red area in North Florida. I found it 30 years ago and never left.

And plan on retiring to the Tallahassee area in the next 8 years after living in Central Florida for 30 years.

It is an oasis in a cultural desert.

I bought a house here in Midway. If you aren't familiar with Midway, it is 10 miles west of Tallahassee and 10 miles east of Quincy. Hence the name. It is Midway between the two towns.

We actually are thinking about selling our land and buying something closer to the coast, but still near Tallahassee.

We have been hanging out in that area and vacationing on SGI for well over 20 years.

Hope to meet you sometime.

Take care.

I know people who live in Wakulla County and I would not want to live close to them. They are unabashed Tea Party types and so are all their neighbors.

Aside from the political climate, the quality of the land north of Tallahassee, Monticello and Quincy is much better than that to the south. If you stand on the hill where the state capitol building is and look south, that drop off is the old beach. The land to the south of that is mostly sand while to the north are the Red Hills of Florida, a clay rich area that is much more fertile.

I've lived in the Tallahassee area for forty five years and have a place north east of Tallahassee. I spent a lot of years looking at land in the area and decided that the red hills were a much better place to live than in the ancient sand dunes south of town. The one advantage - in my mind - of living to the south is the chance of getting a place with a nice sinkhole. But then of course you have the chance of getting a sinkhole where you don't want one.

Of course, your mileage may vary. These days I want to stay on my clay ridge 200 feet above current sea level.

But the lure of a house on SGI is compelling. And I know the hurricane risk and the potential sea level rise. But life has been good to us and we am not young!

I have lived my entire life in red places and until fairly recently leaned that way myself. Until President Obama helped me see the light.

Those people down in Franklin and Gulf county continually vote against their own interest. If we totally give up on them we have lost them.

And at the end of the day my life is way more than just politics. I love fishing, hunting and boating.

If you at Northeast of Tallahassee you are pretty close to our land. Great soil and it used to be part of a plantation. Maybe a little more due east of Tally.
