FL House Speaker calls for sheriff's suspension following Parkland shooting

FL House Speaker calls for sheriff's suspension following Parkland shooting
BayNews9 (Tampa Bay), 2/25/18

Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran has called for the suspension of Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Corcoran sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott on Sunday, urging him to suspend Israel for “incompetence and dereliction of duty.”

“In the years leading up to this unspeakable tragedy, Sheriff Israel, his deputies, and staff ignored repeated warning signs about the violent, erratic, threatening, and antisocial behavior of Nikolas Jacob Cruz,” Corcoran wrote in the letter.

The letter is supported by 73 other Republican members of the Florida House.

On the other hand, if it gets law enforcement in other counties to make arrests in DV cases so they can get the guns, it might help.

Most likely this was pushed by NRA people as retaliation for Israel's comments on gun control.

Either he resigns or the Republican representatives resign.

He has no reason to consider resignation. Everyone wants to hang this on the Sheriff. He trained the officers and gave them weapons. Those that chose not to go in will have to live with that. And who's to say it would have done any good?
There's only one person to blame and that's the shooter.

The Governor can't suspend him because he doesn't work for him. He works for Broward County.
This letter is the Republican Speaker's version of doing something about gun control. He knows it won't go anywhere.

I'd rather not see the governor suspend Sheriff Israel. Because as you said, the sheriff was elected.

What I would like to see is Sheriff Israel fired by the voters in a recall election. He has to go. It's like when a navy ship is involved in a major incident. It might have been the fault of an ensign standing watch on the bridge. But the captain has to go. And the captain does go.
