Construction company tried to hide that it cheated workers out of $111,000 in pay

A Florida metal framing construction company owes 100 workers $111,197 in back pay after getting caught not paying overtime and trying to conceal it with shady bookkeeping, the Department of Labor announced Friday.

Instead of paying time-and-a-half for overtime, the department explained, Winter Garden company KBL Buildings would pay just extra $3 per hour. That’s the crime. Here’s the cover-up.

“The employer attempted to conceal the violation on the payroll by labeling the straight-time payment as travel, and the $3 per hour as per diem payments,” the Department of Labor release said.

Under the About Us part of KBL Buildings’ website, the second and third items are “Be honest, fair and trustworthy in all of your daily activities and business relationships” and “Do not engage in any activity that could call into question the Company’s honesty, impartiality or reputation.”

A huge penalty. They would certainly terminate an employee for stealing time from them, so they need to make the employees whole and pay them additional compensation.
