Did anyone catch the phrase "school district police"? It wasn't the Riviera Beach police either. It was the district.

and I told all my student teachers and High School ROP students to NOT go into the profession. None of them listened to me. When other, older teachers told me that they told their own kids not to become a teacher their own kids didn't listen either. We tried to warn them!

They didn't have any clue about the issues in dealing with administrators, parents, district and state politics, financial issues in and out of the classroom as well as teacher pay and long hours, teaching to the test, etc.

One year 45% of my school's teachers retired early due to the top down policies of a new superintendent and the people he brought in to reshape the district. Yes, it can be THAT BAD! The district is still recovering from the mess he made. Over 75% of the librarians, counselors, tech help, ESL teachers, 2nd Lang teachers, Spec Ed teachers, custodians, aides, gardeners, nurses, etc were all laid off. Forget about The Arts altogether. Teachers are supposed to perform all of those duties as well. That is why I told them what the real story was. When 50% of new teachers leave the profession in the first five years, after all that money and time spent to become a teacher too, you know there is a problem.

Every year would start out with the back to school, staff meetings:

"We know you have a great deal of paperwork and record keeping to take care of. Now here's some more."

O.T. and class coverage was $39.00 per hour. They had difficulty getting subs so teachers would cover several classes a month during their free periods.

Gym teachers had it best. This would consist of several gym classes at the same time. It was a large school. If a teacher was out, their class would be combined with other classes and the teachers would split the $39. By December of each year, this would happen several classes a week. Gym teachers were making over $125k.
