How to lobby a State Senator (Disney version)
1. Be clear about your issues. If there is a bill number, have it available (SF 233, HF 174, SSB 1053, etc.) State why you are for or against the bill and what impact it would have on your life. Stay focused on your issues. It is very difficult to sort through an e-mail that drifts between a myriad of issues and your message will be lost.
2. Remain respectful. I always strive to be respectful of my constituents, whether I agree or disagree with their positions. I will always listen to my constituents, regardless of my stance, as long as they present their information in a calm and rational manner. If the tone of the discussion becomes accusatory, uses inappropriate language, or escalates to yelling, I will excuse myself from the conversation or hit delete.
3. Be aware of time constraints. If you plan to visit the Capitol, please e-mail or call ahead of time. Dependent upon the week, legislators schedules can be very hectic. Our schedules change frequently, but I will do my best to see you when you arrive. The Senate goes into session at 1 p.m. on Monday and at 9 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Try to schedule visits around these times and committee meeting times. Daily schedules for the Senate can be found by visiting https://www.legis.iowa.gov/Schedules/meetingsListChamber.aspx?
Again, lobbying is very important! Good policy is developed when legislators hear from their constituents.
