5 votes enough to extend sales tax in Oto, Iowa

OTO, Iowa -- Five votes were a sufficient total to broaden the scope of a 1-cent local option sales tax in Oto.

The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday canvassed the results from the Aug. 7 special election on the sales tax. Oto is a town of 108 people in southeast Woodbury County, and five people voted for the tax extension, while three voted no.

If the vote had been 4-4, the measure would not have passed, as a majority is needed.

Iowa law allows cities and counties to collect a sales tax of one penny on certain purchases and services. The Oto measure expands how the city council can spend the money in the town's budget, making the usage less restrictive.
