Complaints turn to praise at Kentucky School for the Blind

On a recent morning, the fragrance of simmering beef wafted through the kitchen of the Life Skills classroom at Kentucky School for the Blind as older students cooked meat for a lunch of shepherd's pie.

Nearby, Trey Mauzy and Mikah Taylor, both 9, helped mash potatoes for the topping.

"They love it," said teacher Tara Harmon of the activities. "We cook every Friday."

And parents say they love what's happening at the school — a major change from a year ago when some parents were so upset with what they said was the deteriorating quality of education for students with multiple learning disabilities that they pulled their children from the historic state institution on Frankfort Avenue.
