Collins says judge backed by anti-abortion groups is an 'outstanding' example

Appearing on the “Hugh Hewitt Show” on Thursday, Sen. Susan Collins said that more women should be appointed to the country’s courts so that they are “more representative of America” before going on to praise a judge supported by anti-abortion groups as an “outstanding” example.

“There are outstanding women, and some have been chosen,” she said. “For example, I’m thinking of Joan Larsen.”

Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Joan Larsen, a Republican who previously served on the Michigan Supreme Court and was a clerk for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, was a finalist to fill retired Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat on the Supreme Court in 2018. Judge Brett Kavanaugh, with his own troubling record on abortion, ultimately became the nominee and was appointed to the Supreme Court after a deciding vote from Collins.

The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List called Larsen’s appointment to the Sixth Circuit Court a “pro-life victory” and Right to Life Michigan endorsed her nomination.
