I had an opportunity to see Congresswoman Donna Edwards and Congressman Chris Van Hollen duke it out at the Kraushaar Auditorium at Goucher College, last Monday. If youd prefer a debate about differing views and you dont like a lot of name-calling, this was not the debate for you. It turns out that the candidates have a lot in common, so, to score points they pointed out inconsistencies, sometimes with great vigor.
The debate started with a 90 second introduction from both candidates. Van Hollen talked about delivering real results, knowing when to fight and when to find common ground, and a dig at his opponent, being about more than just rhetoric, which does not get the job done. Edwards talked about the reality that even with our improving economy and college opportunities, Marylanders are struggling, and that she personally understands. As such, she can bring that understanding voice to the Senate and stand for struggling Marylanders.

We are fortunate in both candidates. I am truly sorry to see either lose.

(6,148 posts)It was so dense that I only got clips. I'd like to know if you think I captured the essence of it.

(15,369 posts)essence, which was much more about what either would do than about differences.
One point though that Van Hollen raised that I had not known about before was that there seems to be some difference about how responsive each was to the constituents in their respective Congressional districts. This point was detailed in an op-ed by Heather Mizeur: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bs-ed-mizeur-vanhollen-20160327-story.html
But Donna is fighting back. Per today's Baltimore Sun: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/blog/bal-rep-donna-edwards-buys-airtime-pushes-back-on-constituent-services-20160404-story.html
It's been a generally civil race between two good candidates. MD is fortunate in the quality of politicians it has, IMO.

I tried to find a link to the broadcast, but either am MPT-challenged or there isn't one, which I find to be strange. Sorry about that.
