I hope you never find out what it's like, but at least rivers usually give you some warning. napi21 Aug 2016 #7

common this time of year, and also flash flooding, but this one's pretty dramatic, IN a town. More later, re: damage + injuries, I guess.

Quite a few years ago, there was a flash flood in Glenshaw (a community north of Pgh. Pa.) I couldn't get home from work because none of the roads were passable, many people & vehicles were washed away for 7-8 mile and bodies were found in the river stopped when they hit into a bridge pier, the grocery store were I used to shop was swept off it's foundation and all the shoppers and workers inside were washed away by the raging flood water. All that happened in an area that never should have had to worry about any flooding. It's MILES away from any river or large body of water.Even though it's been a long time, I'll NEVER forget the tragedy.

and I was thinking of the rivers there while reading your post! I'm at the shore of a big river (NOT the Ohio, of course,) and tho I expected some, I'm not sure we had any rain last night. 80 miles south east of Ellicot City.

It doesn't help with the damage doe, but it give a little time for people to get out to a safer spot.
