Resident donates $1 million of land to Bowley's Quarters Volunteer Fire Department

Members of the Bowley’s Quarters Volunteer Fire Department gathered at an Installation of Officers Banquet on Saturday, January 13, to celebrate an unprecedented donation to the organization.

The volunteer fire department was donated a 9.2-acre parcel of land on Carroll Island Rd. by resident Nancy Hubers, a retired state House of Delegates representative. This land, estimated to be worth over $1 million, will be the new site of the BQVFD station which is currently situated on the 900 block of Bowleys Quarters Rd.

“I’m going to say a word that has probably never been used in a firehouse. The word I’m going to use is ‘philanthropist,’” said John Hammen, the former president of the BQVFD. He welcomed Hubers to the stage by saying she was the philanthropist in their midst.

He explained that Hubers and her husband, Dan, had purchased large pieces of land and other investments years ago in the growing Essex/Middle River neighborhood.
