MTA recommends major cuts to commuter rail and bus service due to the pandemic

Breakfast links: MTA recommends major cuts to commuter rail and bus service due to the pandemic

By Nicole Cacozza (Contributor) September 2, 2020

Major MTA cuts will slash service
The Maryland Transit Agency lost $150 million in covid-related budget cuts, and will start reducing service for MARC trains and Baltimore-area bus routes in 2021. A third of LocalLink bus routes would go away, and 40% of the remaining ones would get reduced service, along with other cuts. (David Collins / WBAL, Kate Ryan / WTOP. Tip: Chester B.)

When Gov. Hogan walked away from hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding for the Red Line, he promised to invest more heavily in bus lines. Today’s move to cut MTA funding breaks that promise, and hurts the Baltimore-area communities that rely on transit to reach schools, jobs, groceries, medical care and more. The pandemic is forcing us to make tough choices, but there are far less harmful ways to balance a budget.
