Question - navigating social services in Baltimore County?

Hi, does anyone here know anything about whether there is a place for someone in Baltimore County to get guidance about what is available in terms of social services? A young woman I know is about to be evicted (probably early January), has a job but doesn't make enough to get a suitable apartment. There are children and custody issues involved. High priority is to keep the teenager in their current high school, where they are doing well after problems in a previous school. But don't know how to do that with any of the options so far identified. One possibility is for her to move in with relatives in a neighboring state, which isn't too horrible distance-wise but probably would "blow up" the whole custody issue and presumably would mean a school change for the teenager.

I am trying to find out if there is any state or county office where she can get guidance. Especially I want to know if there is any reasonable, legal way to keep the kid in the same school even if the parent moves to a different district, county, or even state. It seems to me that society has an interest in kids doing well in school and that especially once they get in high school they shouldn't get yanked from school to school just because of issues the parent faces.

I have no idea how to approach these questions but it has become apparent to me that those closest to the situation also have no idea. Then I got this bright idea that someone here might have some suggestions.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I've asked a friend in Baltimore who works with social services stuff. Will let you know what, if anything, she has to say.

Good luck.

'I just talked to an attorney that I work with and she said that there is no legal obligation on the school to provide transportation for the child if they move out of the district. However if the child moves but stays within the district and the family is homeless the district would be obligated to provide them with transportation.

Every school in baltimore county should have a Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW) who's job it is to connect families with resources and support students, I would suggest that mom speaks to this person to see what her options are.'

MH1, this doesn't sound like huge help, but maybe the school's PPW can come up with ideas.

Best.

I appreciate you checking for me. I'll see if the mother knows about the PPW and if she's talked to them.
