What Should Be Fate of Confederate Monument in Rockville?

City leaders will hold a work session July 20 to get input from residents on the monument, which sits on county-owned land.

Rockville’s Mayor and Council will hold a special work session to gather, review and discuss possible options for the Confederate soldier monument that sits near the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville Town Center.

The public is invited to participate in the community discussion. The work session will be held at 6 p.m. July 20 at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave., according to the city’s website.

Experts have been invited to attend and present options. The mayor and council are asking residents to participate in the discussion and offer their views.

The monument, which was dedicated in 1913, was moved to its current location on the east side of the building in 1971. It depicts a life-sized bronze cavalry Confederate soldier on top of a granite pedestal ...
