You would he would tone down such displays of wealth and privilege, especially after poisoning the whole town of Flint.

Considering the states declining income levels and climbing poverty rates, its crumbling schools and failing infrastructure, not to mention the Flint water crisis, the cake is a grotesque display of luxury and opulence that has many Michigan residents fuming.

(10,559 posts)I thought the image was a stock one intended to freak people out and it took actually reading the story to get that YES, THAT IS THE CAKE.
Wow.
My first reaction is "for heaven's sake, birthday cake is NOT that big of a deal" but reality is totally tone deaf, and the cake should have been a private event without reporters.
If it had been, it would have been a funny family joke.
Instead, it becomes symbolic of tone deaf politicians.
With that being said, I would like to point out that Sue Snyder has championed lowering infant mortality in Michigan and has used her influence to get some movement on this issue, so, let her have some cake, and chill out.
Flint is a disaster. Cake is a distraction.
