CLARE COUNTY, Mich. -- An 80-year-old grandmother in Clare County was jailed for the first time in her life, because she had a small amount of cannabis at home but her Michigan medical marijuana card expired.

Delores Saltzman and her son Mark tell FOX 17 cannabis saved her life: it worked up her appetite when she was sick; helped her heal after surgeries; and eases her pain from ongoing health conditions. They are disturbed a deputy jailed her overnight for using her medicine.

"After I smoke I go down to a one, pain-wise," said Delores Saltzman, 80. "Before I smoke, I would say I’m an 8 right now."

This November, Saltzman turns 81. She lives with arthritis, diverticulitis, muscle and bone aches, but she says cannabis keeps her moving and making art.

And they'll try, many of them, to keep enforcing the old laws as long as any vestige remains.

has said he will treat pot arrests just like a heroin arrest. He says he sees no good use of pot.

Meanwhile my 30 yr CIA veteran wife has done a complete 180 after she saw the difference in my step-son after he started using pot to treat his PSTD. Completely turned him around and his life is now going good. She now supports total legalization. She no longer throws away the one hitters or buds she might find on my dresser.

I ended up in a hospital in FL for 3 weeks with 6 inches of colon removed.

At times, I wished I had died. I can only guess what life is like for that poor woman at her age.

She earned the freedom from pain, she should already have by right.

Even though this is absolutely ridiculous with that officer did to my mother it’s giving us a great platform to get people out to vote for recreational marijuana this November.

Mom wants everyone to speak about their medical marijuana use and not be ashamed of it or hide it anymore.

Growing up I hated the smell of the marijuana and I didn’t understand why my mom used it.

After understanding what type of pain she was under I now understand that the marijuana has helped her heal and it saved your life after one of her operations.

I urge everyone to get registered to vote if you’re not then please support the referendum to control marijuana like alcohol in Michigan this November.

Thank you and your mom for speaking out!

It's awful what your mother had to go through. I wish her the best and hope she's doing good now.

Getting people to vote is an excellent way to turn this travesty into a positive!!!!
