City officials: Winter Classic post-game traffic delays caused by fans taking over Main Street

The city of Ann Arbor took a beating via social media on New Year's Day from NHL fans who reported major traffic delays leaving town after the Winter Classic.

In some cases, fans said they sat in traffic for two or more hours with gridlock on Main Street blocking access to Interstate 94, which many fans headed back to the Metro Detroit area and Canada were counting on taking to get home.

Some visitors headed back to Canada said it took more than five hours to reach the border when it should have taken only an hour and a half.

But city officials said on Thursday it was the hockey fans themselves who caused major disruptions with the post-game exit strategy.
