Governor Mark Dayton ordered all K-12 public schools closed Monday to protect Minnesota school children from forecasted dangerously cold weather. The National Weather Service is predicting that most of the state will experience the coldest temperatures in a decade with lows reaching -30 degrees and wind chills predicted to reach as low as -50 degrees. High temperatures from International Falls to Rochester are forecast to reach only -15 degrees.

Here's one resident who may welcome the extreme cold wave headed for Minnesota. Your local Ash tree.

... As I gauge the incoming cold wave event, my latest read is that the Twin Cities area will see close to 84 consecutive sub-zero hours starting Saturday night, and lasting into Wednesday morning. Model forecasts vary, but the deepest cold should peak somewhere between -20 and -26 Monday and Tuesday mornings.

As for the emerald ash borer -- its kind of long. In my words, expect a heck of a lot of mortality, but not a total wipe out. Meaning it only slows down the rate of ash borer infestation, not stop it. And what insects do survive will be more cold-tolerant, as well as their children and grandchildren....

I hope the wasps they brought in to combat the ash borer survive so they can contiune their work in the spring.

which will be just as cold.

But I suppose Monday being first day after winter break, they were concerned of whether school bus could start.

And... Minneapolis, at least, will have the principals at schools in case some parents, especially where English is a second language, may have missed the announcement.

but I'm not sure about the rest of the state but St Paul schools went back to classes Thursday the 2nd

thanks for the info about Mpls schools I wonder too how many parents are scrambling for day care, my SO's employer sent out an email shortly after the school closures were announced reminding folks that just because schools were closed did not mean they were too and people were expected to be at work Monday-and this is not a minimum wage employer either
