http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2014/10/rick_nolan_disses_star_tribune.phpYesterday, the Star Tribune endorsed Stewart Mills' effort to unseat Rick Nolan as the congressman for Minnesota's Eighth District.
The historically left-leaning paper's endorsement of a Republican created a bit of a stir and led some to wonder whether the Strib's new owner -- former Republican legislator Glen Taylor -- has started exerting his influence on the editorial board.
But as David Brauer reports, Strib officials won't pull back the curtain about how they make endorsements:Later in the day, Nolan netted a significant endorsement of his own, as 19 Iron Range mayors threw their support behind his reelection bid.
In a statement about the mayors' endorsement, Nolan offered up a diss of the Strib.
"I'd rather be endorsed by 19 Iron Range mayors than the Minneapolis Star Tribune," he said.
We imagine he would've said something else had the Strib's editorial board come to a different conclusion regarding the race in the Eighth.
bold highlighting mine.. Zing!

(34,661 posts)it became a toss up due to the adding of Anoka County. Rick is the real deal and not a Johnny Come Lately like Mills. Nollan will carry the Range and the Union vote in Anoka County but if the Fundies in Anoka and Champlin due their regular crap of disinformational paper drops, don't know how this will play out. Hope Rick wins big time. Mills is such a fake living off of daddy's money. F--- Fleet Farm Stores for that matter the same for Menards.

I live in the 8th district, Rick Nolan is my Representative - and I certainly want to keep it that way.

(28,082 posts)apparently they think the anti-mining votes will go to Sandman and most those are votes that would otherwise go to Nolan.
There's also been concern about Sandman taking Nolan votes expressed by Nolan supporters on Facebook and supposedly Nolan himself said something along those lines (though I have no reliable source for that).
In theory, I like what the Green Party says they stand for. But I haven't trusted it since 2002 when they endorsed a candidate for Senate to run against Wellstone - despite objections from a good many of its members, including Winona LaDuke. (And the candidate they endorsed was to the right of Wellstone.) I think it has a good many members who are content to act as spoilers to help Republicans and I'm not sure that isn't what its aim is in the 8ith this year.

(28,082 posts)I just looked it up - here is a link to his FB page.

I heard about him because someone who was quite active in DFL progressive groups has been supporting him quite vigorously on FB and will not listen to any arguments about what kind of damage this could do in such a tight race.
I'm encouraged that you haven't heard about him - hopefully he will not be a factor after all.

(31,893 posts)Anyway, unless Sandman has been campaigning around the Reservation, I doubt he's any kind of threat around my area.
My precinct encompasses District 3 of the Mille Lacs Band, and they are pretty faithful DFL voters.

(19,339 posts)It makes me furious. It's mostly anti-mining DFLers. Copper mining will happen on the Range, one way or the other. We can have Republicans in charge of it or Democrats. It's not a perfect choice, but it is a choice.

(19,339 posts)DFLers got an "anti" Sandman pamphlet in the mail put out by Norm Coleman's PAC. It's meant to draw Sandman votes from Nolan.
