Brooklyn Center Arby's sign rewritten into racist message

An Arby's marquee in suburban Brooklyn Center was altered some time late Friday night or early Saturday morning to spell out a racist and mysoginistic message.

By midday Saturday, an image of the sign was widely circulated online, leading to questions of whether the sign was the work of an Arby's employee (and a racist, awful one at that) or a random passerby vandal (ditto).

Arby's wasn't volunteering as much, if it does know the author's identity, but the company is well aware of the sign's rewriting. A statement from Arby's says its board was "compromised" by "someone," who used its black letters to spell out something "extremely offensive."

The message was soon taken down, and Arby's says it is "cooperating with local law enforcement officials" regarding the incident, with intent to "take appropriate action against those involved." (No one from the Brooklyn Center Police Department was available to speak to the matter on Saturday.)

Teen Charged In Racist Arby’s Sign Incident, CBS, 9/7/18

A 19-year-old Minneapolis man faces three misdemeanor charges in connection with the offensive defacement of a fast food restaurant sign last weekend.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s office says Usindini Christopher Colling-Harper admitted to changing the letters on the sign of the Brooklyn Center Arby’s because he was bored while waiting for a bus early Saturday morning.

... Police searched Facebook to see who posted a photo of the sign first, and found a woman posted it with the caption, “Seems like Arby’s hiring in bc.” Investigators contacted the woman, who said Colling-Harper — her boyfriend — was the culprit, and he did it because he thought it was funny.

Colling-Harper told police he did not mean to cause harm to the restaurant, but the manager told police they had to unplug the business’s phones from the influx of complaints and threats. The manager also said people were using the drive-thru to yell at workers about the offensive sign.

Colling-Harper was charged with one count each of criminal defamation, disorderly conduct and public nuisance. He could face up to a year in prison if convicted.
