Gov. Sisolak fulfills campaign pledge by donating paycheck to high-poverty Nevada schools

Gov. Steve Sisolak says he’s keeping a campaign promise to donate his salary to Nevada’s public schools.

Sisolak’s office on Wednesday announced he had cut his first check to the state’s beleaguered K-12 public school system, writing in a letter to the Nevada State Board of Education that he planned to make a quarterly donation to schools in low-income area.

“I asked the people of Nevada for the chance to lead this state for many reasons, chief among them being the opportunity to improve educational outcomes for every child in every classroom in the state,” the Democratic governor said in a statement. “To show my commitment to this goal, the First Lady and I are donating my net state salary back to public education. It is my sincere hope that with these donations, I can begin to fulfill my promise to our educators, families, and children and make a positive impact on our public schools.”

Sisolak and his wife Kathy set up a separate bank account for the governor’s paycheck donations earlier this year, according to his office. They’ve instructed the state Department of Education to divvy up those checks equally to each of Nevada’s more than 400 Title 1 public schools.
