(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) Gibson Medical Facility could become cornerstone site for new homeless shelter

The city of Albuquerque is moving forward with negotiations to purchase the 500,000-square-foot Gibson Medical Facility in southeast Albuquerque. The facility is currently being used as an overflow center to treat COVID-19 patients. City officials said their negotiations will not disrupt treatment.

The city said the site could become the cornerstone for the Gateway Center—the city’s new homeless shelter.

“We've often talked about the need for something 24/7, where first responders, or a person could go get out of the elements and be safe, and be housed and have food. We know that on site medical and behavioral health services are really important, and we've learned that out at the West Side, it's just a little complicated because of the distance to get out there,” said Carol Pierce, director of Family and Community Services for the City of Albuquerque.

“I think the proximity to the Veterans Administration hospital is a really great opportunity to figure out, again, how we work with the Veterans' Integration Center, and our veterans who may be experiencing homelessness to meet their needs,” Pierce added.
