NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – The U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn says Congressman Michael Grimm has been taken into custody to face federal charges.

The Staten Island Republican was being booked on Monday at the New York FBI office in lower Manhattan. He was expected to be arraigned later.

Prosecutors didn’t immediately specify the exact charges he faces. Investigators have been examining his fundraising in a 2010 race and his involvement in a restaurant that was once fined for not carrying workers’ compensation insurance.

“Congressman Grimm asserts his innocence of any wrongdoing,” Grimm’s attorney, William McGinley said in a statement on Friday. “When the dust settles, he will be vindicated.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - A little-known electoral backdoor could allow GOP Rep. Michael Grimm to get off the fall ballot and name his own successor to replace him.

But Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn), with a federal indictment looming over him, would have to move out of New York state.

Moving out of state is one of the four ways that a candidate can be removed from the ballot after the petitioning process has ended.
