NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) A federally funded tunnel on Manhattans West Side leads to nowhere, for now.
The 800-foot-long concrete trench could someday lead to two new commuter rail tunnels under the Hudson River to New Jersey, but that will happen only if the billions needed to build them ever materialize.
The $185 million access tunnel is being built now because the massive Hudson Yards development with six skyscrapers will soon rise on top of it. Trying to dig such a huge trench through the bedrock after those buildings are completed, officials say, would be an engineering and financial nightmare.

(31,828 posts)Highway fund - to avoid raising taxes on gases.
Key point - he did it unilaterally and simply to score points with the national Conservative leadership.
But he did a pretty damn good job of selling a lot of folks a load of b.s. that it was the right thing to do. He also pumped up the numbers that New Jerseyans would have been on the hook for . . . .

(31,828 posts)Now the scramble is going to be for NJ to come up with the money to allow trains to go into that station. It WILL be finished - but at what cost? He's talking taxes again. Buono brought this up in the election -but I think because she didn't offer a concrete solution/way forward the issue dropped.
