Ithaca lawyer wins $175K for anti-fracking work

Andrew Casler

Helen Slottje, of Ithaca, won an international environmental activism award today for helping New York state municipalities develop hydraulic fracturing bans.

Slottje won the The Goldman Environmental Prize, a $175,000 award that’s bestowed yearly upon one person from each of the six inhabited continental regions around the globe.

She is schedule to accept the prize for North America at an award ceremony today in San Francisco.

Slottje and her husband, David, began working to ban New York state fracking in 2009. David Slottje is not named as a winner because Goldman prizes recognize only one person, not a group of people or an organization, Helen Slottje said.
