Burke, Hassig removed from ballot in NY21 race

DANIEL FLATLEY
WATERTOWN — Stephen W. Burke, a Democratic candidate, and Donald L. Hassig, a Green Party candidate, both had their ballot petitions invalidated by the New York state Board of Elections on Wednesday.

The commissioners of the board, two Republicans and two Democrats, removed 175 signatures from Mr. Burke’s petitions, leaving him with 1,116 — 134 shy of the minimum 1,250 needed to get on the ballot.

Mr. Burke has a hearing at 11:15 a.m. Monday with the state Supreme Court to appeal the board’s decision. His petitions were reviewed line by line, according to board spokesman John W. Conklin.

In the meantime, he needs to vet 134 of those 175 and try to prove to the Supremes that they're good to go.

He was pretty thick, though, only having a cushion of forty signatures. You want a LOT of cushion on those things.

It doesn't hurt if your signature gatherers are "known quantities" either--conscientious types who will chat up the signers to be alert for shenanigans!
