WATERTOWN Stephen W. Burke, a Democratic candidate, and Donald L. Hassig, a Green Party candidate, both had their ballot petitions invalidated by the New York state Board of Elections on Wednesday.
The commissioners of the board, two Republicans and two Democrats, removed 175 signatures from Mr. Burkes petitions, leaving him with 1,116 134 shy of the minimum 1,250 needed to get on the ballot.

He was pretty thick, though, only having a cushion of forty signatures. You want a LOT of cushion on those things.
In this state you try to get at least 500 more signatures than you need.

Of course in the cities it is easier to get signatures.
