New boating regulations have led to a minor increase in people taking safety courses, according to the New York state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
In a news release Thursday, the agency announced regulations with the intent to "make New York waterways safer." According to the release, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law requiring anyone born on or after May 1, 1996, who wants to operate a motorboat to obtain a Boating Safety Certificate by completing an approved eight-hour course.
Courses may be completed and certificates obtained through the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, U.S. Power Squadron, or the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

(26,877 posts)I'm a boater - operating one for 38 of my 48 years on earth. My Dad died in a boating accident when I was just shy of 3 years old. Before I could take the boat out on my own, my Mother and Brother BOTH put me thru stringent courses on boating safety. At 14, I took a state-approved course on boating safety.
