LISA L. COLANGELO
A heartbroken pooch who lost his family in the fury of Hurricane Sandy was reunited with them 18 months later in an amazing turn of fate.
Lucas, whose real name is Reckless, was found as a stray in Monmouth County, New Jersey back in October.
Charles and Elicia James were stunned when they walked into the Monmouth County SPCA last week and spotted their beloved pup.
I told my wife That dog looks like Reckless and she said It is Reckless! Charles James told The News. He started jumping three feet in the air and we started crying.

(9,126 posts)I can't imagine how happy that family must be. And bless all no kill shelters!!!!! Reckless wouldn't be alive today if those special people didn't care for him all this time.

(71,265 posts)Kill shelters should be abolished.

(9,126 posts)There is a push to make shelters in Los Angeles no kill, but all shelters and rescues are full to the brim with animals that people abandon. It is very expensive to care for an animal for its full life of food and vet care. I think that in this situation, breeding should become illegal and spay and neutering should be mandatory as it is in some SoCal counties. I know that sounds harsh, but there is no bloody reason to make more animals when there are so many being euthanized. I work with people to get their animals fixed and I can't believe the apathy and ignorance of pet owners. I donate to causes that provide low cost spay and neuter because that is one way to help solve the overage. I fix ferals in my neighborhood. I applaud all the animal shows on tv that are teaching people how to be better owners and spreading the word about spay/neuter. I keep having to convince people it won't hurt and will save both pet and owner lots of grief and a much longer life, especially for males.

(9,126 posts)It is a condition for adoption from most places the animal is already fixed, or when you get a kitten or puppy that is too young to fix, you sign a contract that you will have it done or the animal can be repossesed if you will. The operations now are so quick and painless, with the animal recovering the same night or the next day and biodegradable glue so you don't have to worry about stitches. And yet, I still have neighbors who are too lazy to do it and let their cats have litter after litter. People (especially guys) don't want to fix their male dogs as if it had anything to do with them. Everyone needs to know it is absolutely essential.
5 cats is a lot, they must keep you busy! The two I have conspire against me to tag team for pets so I would be totally outnumbered with 5. They're shameless! I've never understood the "cats are too aloof" thing. Sometimes I wish mine were!

(71,265 posts)But sleeping a full night is a challenge. One licks my eyes to wake me and the others will just meow to wake me up.
The liter box always have to be cleaned.

(9,126 posts)My little cat will lick me right on the tip of my nose as an open sesame sign when he wants to get under the covers. He is also the smallest thing in the house but manages to take up the most bed space.
I bet you all have a blast!

(5,067 posts)divide the money between no kill shelters, soup kitchens and food banks. I can't see buying a dog or cat when so many millions are put down each year. Thank goodness that dog was found by a no kill shelter and not one that automatically put pit bulls down.
