Tenants could see rent freeze after Rent Guidelines Board votes for 0% to 3% hike

ERIN DURKIN

The city could see its first ever rent freeze for a million tenants after the Rent Guidelines Board voted to increase rents by somewhere between 0% and 3%.

The board - appointed mostly by Mayor de Blasio, who campaigned vowing a rent freeze - approved the proposal that would allow a freeze or a modest hike for rent stabilized apartments with one-year leases Monday night. They’ll settle on a final number at another vote in June.

For two-year leases, rents would go up by 0.5% to 4.5%. The group passed the proposal by a vote of 8-1, with both tenant reps and one landlord rep joining the members representing the public in voting yes.
