Dredged PCB to be hauled by barge, not truck

As dredging of PCBs from the Hudson River resumes Wednesday for its fifth season, plans for a "landlocked" section of river call for using barges to bring material for treatment in Fort Edward rather than to a treatment plant along the shore in Saratoga County.

The revised plan for two miles of river, between the Thompson Island and Fort Miller dams north of the Washington County village of Fort Miller, will send PCB-laden barges to a spit of land on the east side of the river below the Thompson Island dam, said Judith Enck, regional administrator the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The dredged sediment will be stored on that land temporarily, then shipped on other barges on the Champlain Canal to the project's PCB-treatment facility in Fort Edward. After water is removed and treated, PCB sediments are sent by rail for disposal out of state.
